Best thing about PA? Illegible license plates

Published by zlobe at 10:08 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I was driving behind some car this morning when I noticed his license plate. It looked something like this:

Ah yes, the old Flagship Niagara plate. They have been around since 1995, so I have been wanting to say this for a long time. I must say this is the greatest license plate EVER! Whoever thought to put white letters on an off-white background is a genius. I’ve often wished I had one of these, because then I would be able to participate in all kinds of illegal activities. Exactly what activities, I’m not sure. But apparently lots of people had that same idea. Why else would they issue thousands of these plates between 1995 and 1997?

I would bet that less than 5% of the drivers that own this plate have any idea what the hell the Flagship Niagara is. I actually had to look it up myself – it is an old warship that fought at Lake Erie in 1812. I think there are less people who care about the ship than there are people who care about having a ridiculously illegible license plate. By the way, that is the reason they stopped selling them after February 1997 (unfortunately about 2 months before I got my license). However, I still see them driving around all the time. I really consider it sort of a PA inside joke that you still see so many of them. I think it’s even funnier because after the initial release, they actually re-designed the plate to try to give it more contrast, but you still can’t read it too well. I found more of the “fleet” online - beautiful isn’t it?

I salute you Flagship Niagara, for giving Pennsylvania the greatest license plate of all time – for criminals.

Let’s remember that criminals make these license plates. Coincidence? I think not.

Kathy: You’re right! The white on off-white is bad enough, but the picture of the ship really obscures that half of the plate further.

Kristin: Good point. Since they stopped selling them, I need to get a hold of my pals in Graterford Prison and see if they can make me up a bootleg version.
