South Street Bridge is (finally) closed

Published by zlobe at 7:21 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

The South Street Bridge, which spans the Schuylkill River in University City, has closed this morning for reconstruction. They will begin demolishing the 85 year old bridge this month and completely rebuild it, a process that will take at least two years. Then again, they have been planning it for 13 years. The original design of the new bridge had several design and safety issues, but now it will be more pedestrian and biker friendly, with crosswalks and stairs that connect to the Schuylkill River Trail. This bridge was old and dilapidated, and chunks of concrete used to fall off of it onto the expressway below. Once completed, this will be a modern bridge that will hopefully be easier to drive, bike and walk on.
