Moving forward with Gallery casino?
The Philadelphia City Planning Commission is recommending that City Council moves forward with a proposal to bring a casino to the Gallery, which is currently this weird mall/transportation center/thingy on Market Street. The Council would have to change the zoning to allow it, but the mayor approves of the plan. The original proposed location for the Foxwoods casino was in South Philly. But it looks like this Gallery thing might happen, despite opposition from neighboring Chinatown. It will be some time before the actual casino would be approved; this is only a step toward approving the zoning change. The Gallery was a cool concept when it opened in the ’70s, but it looks like the city wants to go in a different direction with that area. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
