Do or die time for the Phillies
The Phillies head to Shea Stadium to begin a three-game showdown with the New York Mets. Long story short, their whole season is on the line this weekend. The Phils are three games behind the Mets for the division lead. If they can somehow sweep, the two teams will be tied.
The problem is the Phillies have played horribly against the Mets this year. They are also not playing very well right now. They lost two out of three to the lowly Washington Nationals while the Mets were winning three straight against Milwaukee. That’s kind of what got the Phillies in this mess. There are not many games left, and anything less than a sweep will leave the Phillies two games back at a minimum. The closer we get to the end of the season, the harder such deficits are to overcome. It’s funny how the local baseball team seems to fade away just as football team is starting. Last year, of course, was the exception, but it took a historic collapse by the Mets, one that I don’t think will happen again this year.
