People I’ve never heard of? Let’s go!

Published by zlobe at 9:27 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

So here we are, in the first official weekend of summer, and all kinds of events are taking place in Philly. One that is really being talked about are the U.S. Olympic Trials for gymnastics. This event is sure to draw a lot of spectators, yet it always surprises me. For a city that has 4 major sports teams and a great college basketball tradition, you never know what minor sporting events are going to attract attention. I am sure most of the people attending the gymnastics trial are not avid fans of the sport or know who most of the contestants are, but they will probably sell out the arena. All I know is that I was great at Summer Games gymnastics on the Commodore 64 as a kid, but that’s as far as it goes.

I remember going to the sports complex about 5 years ago to watch the X-Games which were in town. I couldn’t believe the number of people I saw there. Philadelphia is not known for a large following of extreme sports, but it was something to do I guess. The same thing happened when I tried to get tickets to the arena football game in the team’s first year. It was completely sold out! But try to listen to the local news or radio stations and see if they ever talk about the Philadelphia Soul. The Olympics will come and go and that’s the last you will hear about gymnastics in Philadelphia for another 4 years.
