No, not the gum tree!
It used to be where “all the hippies meet”. When I lived in Philly, it was where I’d see some great shows and watch a lot of crazy people walking around. South Street, a pretty unique place that is usually an interesting experience. It was the first place I ever saw Irish water ice — to this day the name confuses the heck out of me. And then all along the little stores nearby you would see signs that said things like — “No food or drink permitted - especially Irish water ice!” (man, that’s pretty specific).
Check out this article . It talks about some of the beautification efforts that are happening right now in the area. They are fixing sidewalks, adding street lamps and bike racks, planting trees and cutting down others. One that they have cut down is the infamous gum tree, an old tree sticking out of the side walk with thousands of pieces of gum stuck on it. I guess it was a little gross, but it was one of the more memorable sights every time I hung out there. Although it seems to have gotten more touristy than it used to be, hopefully this facelift will help South Street become more accessible and friendly while keeping in its tradition of being just a little bit different than most destinations.

They really do need to fix the sidewalks - roots from trees have made it all uneven. However I think that they can’t get rid of the gum tree…it’s almost like a historic spot. If they cut this down, someone is just going to start another gum tree..
Yup another gum tree will sprout for sure!
