Before Utley, there was…

Published by zlobe at 10:29 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Juan Samuel (WAN SOM-WELL). For Phillies fans in the 1980s, you might remember the former second baseman, but kind of forget about him. When I was asked if I knew which Phillie was named to this year’s Wall of Fame (basically a plaque hanging up on a wall in the ballpark), I guessed 3 of the 5 finalists (Dykstra, Daulton, and Kruk) and was unable to come up with the one who actually was selected. Maybe it’s because Samuel played on some pretty bad Phillies teams. Maybe it’s because he was actually traded for Dykstra, who was every bit as exciting a player. But if you look at the numbers, Juan Samuel had 6 plus really solid years at second base for Philadelphia. He had speed, some power, and a likable personality. Here he is at a press conference announcing his inclusion in the Wall of Fame.

Question for Phillies fans… without looking up the answer, who do you think the 5th finalist for this year was?
