I believe the hole is made for both softball and baseball. I know as a kid I never really liked the hole and never really saw exactly what the point of it was. I do remember that some my teammates would stick their index finger out and on top of the glove (with no hole). I always preferred wearing a batting glove under mine. To each his own I guess.

Softball gloves have holes too! I remember I thought I was so cool for using it for some reason. Even though I never knew what it was for either.

The finger hole is for better gription. At least that's what I used it for back in the day. I remember my mom baking my gloves in the oven to get them broken in properly. My neighbor showed me her new flip flops, which she baked in the oven to shape properly to her feet. I am never going to eat pizza from the neighbor's oven again!
