The weather is heating up and so are the Phils
I’m not sure how hot it was in Atlanta this afternoon, but in Philly it was in the upper 90s. The Phillies are hoping that their win total will match that number by the end of the season. If they keep this up, it will be a fun season. Great all-around effort as the Phils complete the sweep of the Braves with a 6-3 victory. All 3 of these games were hard-fought and close into the late innings (this one was tied from the 4th inning all the way until the ninth). I like how Adam Eaton’s been pitching lately; the Phils are going to need consistent efforts like this from all of their starters, which has been happening for the last week. And of course, the bullpen has been outstanding. Guess who else is heating up? Ryan Howard. 3 for 5 with 4 RBI and he has his average up to a blistering .214. Below is today’s picture from the game, followed by today’s question.

So there’s a picture of Eaton from today’s game. My question is: What is the name of the little hole in your mitt that you stick your index finger out of, and do you need it? I was never sure whether all gloves have this, and in fact had a conversation about this with my wife the other night. I always used mine when I played, and I thought that baseball gloves had this hole and softball gloves do not. I am not sure now. I saw someone on TV whose glove had the hole, but keeps all of his fingers inside the glove. Any thoughts on this? Do you know why they exist, which gloves have them and do you have a preference on whether or not to use it? I would like to get your opinion.

The finger hole is for better gription. At least that’s what I used it for back in the day. I remember my mom baking my gloves in the oven to get them broken in properly. My neighbor showed me her new flip flops, which she baked in the oven to shape properly to her feet. I am never going to eat pizza from the neighbor’s oven again!
Softball gloves have holes too! I remember I thought I was so cool for using it for some reason. Even though I never knew what it was for either.
Kristin - YES! I told Bryan that softball gloves have holes and he denied it!
I believe the hole is made for both softball and baseball. I know as a kid I never really liked the hole and never really saw exactly what the point of it was. I do remember that some my teammates would stick their index finger out and on top of the glove (with no hole). I always preferred wearing a batting glove under mine. To each his own I guess.
